A tooth extraction may seem a daunting prospect, but it is in fact a fairly straight forward dental procedure. A tooth may need to be removed for a number of reasons. Although we try and repair teeth that are broken or damaged when possible, it is sometimes the case that teeth may need to be removed when damage is beyond repair. Extraction may also be necessary when teeth are severely decayed or infected. A tooth may also need to be removed due to its poor position in the mouth, or in order to proceed with orthodontic treatment.
Your dentist will discuss alternatives to extractions if possible, but if this is not possible, you’ll be offered information about available tooth replacement treatments. Tooth replacement options include dental implants, bridges and dentures.
Your dentist will advise you if you are in need of a tooth extraction, as well provide you with information about tooth replacement treatments.
During the extraction, it is normal to experience quite a bit of pressure. However, prior to the extraction, your dentist will numb the area to ensure that your extraction is pain free.
Your dentist will provide you with plenty of information about aftercare. This includes:
– Avoiding rinsing or spitting, smoking or drinking hot liquids and alcohol in the following 24 hours.
– Placing an ice pack in the event of swelling
– Placing a moist gauze over the empty socket for approximately 5 minutes to control post extraction bleeding
– Taking pain relief medications such as Paracetamol and/or Ibuprofen should you experience any pain
