Tooth decay results in tooth cavities and can recur even in filled teeth. Silver amalgam fillings are still carried out routinely but many patients opt for white fillings.
White fillings are known as composites and are more natural in appearance. On a chemical level they bond to the remaining tooth.
Onlays and inlays are custom laboratory made fillings which are cemented onto the tooth. These can be a good alternative to a full crown and where a normal filling cannot be placed. A choice of materials is available, ranging from composite to porcelain to gold.
Appointments for fillings normally last between 30-60 minutes. The dentist will first numb the tooth and surrounding area. Once any decay has been removed, the dentist will begin to fill the tooth with composite. Once hardened, the filling will then be shaped to look as natural as possible and in a way that doesn’t interfere with your biting and chewing.
